I've done ONT for business in the Inland Empire. My obervation was that to get anywhere from ONT you have to rent a car. Luckily, car rental is relatively convenient there and not overpriced (at least for California). Just remember to get maps and use them, or get the GPS, because the airport is not directly connected to any freeways though the 10 is nearby. Taxis anywhere in California are $$$ prohibitive; cheaper to rent a car if you're going more than a few miles.
The nearest Metrolink station is on the UP (Riverside) line, where service can be sparse outside commute times/directions. The "real" Metrolink San Bernardino line with more regular service is north and farther away - look for the Rancho Cucamonga and Upland stations. Your taxi ride would be closer to $20, and good luck getting one to pick you up for the trip back. The rail line that goes right by the airport terminal is the UP Alhambra sub - no passenger service except the very occasional Sunset.
