aside from metal fatigued frames cracking the sad reality was they were contaminated w/PCBs. AFAIK they have roller bearings.
I should say in passing that I believe Amtrak should have asked Siemens (and the other bidders) to do a modern guts in a GG1 shell. Even as a B-B (the Sprinter) it would look gorgeous.
