I wish Amtrak would just completely revamp the coast operation.. The Starlight is a good, useful and successful train (always did have good cash flow)- when it runs. My idea:

Sleeping car service isn't needed from OAK to LA

Run 2 EB & 2 WB coach trains w/ 1st class daytime accomodations (parlor or private daytime only rooms)with full lounge & diner service from SAC to LA

Run the Starlight on its existing schedule (+ local service to Gilroy) OAK to SEA

Passengers going south to LA or north to SEA to the next available train.
Southbound sleeper passengers transfer to 1st class "parlor"
