SP Alco S6 1279 is one of the Southern Pacific S6's equipped for MU operation. Location unrecorded but "Railbaron" said, "looks like the "Tie UP Track" at Homestead Yard (east end of West Oakland Yard) at Adeline Street." In Oakland, CA, December 28, 1972.
According to good
sources including Strapac's fantastic SP Compendium series, S6 SP 1279 was built by ALCo in December 1955 as SP 4643, SP Class Class DF-307, construction number 81430, order number S-3249. It was reclassified as Class DS-607 in 1963. It became SP 1279, SP Class AS409-5 in the 1965 renumbering. It was retired August 1978 and sold to Chrome Crankshaft. It was sold as Kansas City Power & Light Co 79 in 1979 and resold as Mid America Car Co 79. It was leased or sold as Continental Grain Co 79. Final disposition unknown.
