Tehachapi - this last weekend

Saturday on Tehachapi turned out well; only minor dissapointment was not the seventy feet of snow I was hoping for. It'd be pretty cool to see a rotary plow get stuck at Keene. Good dusting, though (a few inches, probably up to a foot in some places) from Cameron to Monolith. The hills looked great under snowcover as background! Breaking storm clouds with crystal clear skies and bright sunshine by 11:00. Reasonable rail traffic, both directions and a light wind picked up in the afternoon (which happened to be colder than a stepmother's kiss, I might add.) as another storm rolled in from the south. Awesome cloud activity all afternoon! Excellent morning for Velvia and Kodachrome and a fine afternoon for Black and White with red and orange filters.

Cold rain started coming down at Tehachapi around 19:00, precluding nigttime photo work (I know, weak excuse!). Passing Bealville area (westbound) around 9-10PM I was slammed by massive wind with thick blowing dust and debris. CHP was escorting traffic eastbound on Hwy 58. I almost ran into the rear corner of a tractor trailor that was sticking out into the right lane by about 5 feet after he or she made what I imagine to be a panic-fueled attempt to pull off to the side of the highway. I probably would have hit it if I hadn't already slowed to 20 MPH as I made my way through there.

The SP/ATSF joint agency building in town seems to be in capable hands. The structure was taken over by the city, I believe, and has been pulled and prodded back to plumb/true with nearly all the wavy sags and settlement eliminated from the south wall, at least. I didn't spend too much time getting around it too much as I was more concerned with filming. They've also sanded down the exterior walls, and replaced about 120 SQ FT of damaged SO/East wall with redwood (!) siding. As a rather proud note, someone had the forethought to replace the roof with wood shingling, as opposed to modern 3-tab. I suspect it will turn out real nice! For those unaware, the U.P. still maintains Tehachapi as a manned out-post, with a modern building, which I think is catty-corner and across the MTs from the old building.
