Snow Snarls

Just heard on the radio that I-90 over Snoqualmie Pass has been reopened after a nearly 24-hour closure. Avlanche control is typically handled there with howitzer shelling, just like BNSF wants to do in John F. Stevens Canyon on the west side of Marias. (Funny how what's acceptable and routine in the Cascades so close to an Interstate and ski resort is being deemed unacceptable on some steep slopes above U.S. 2 far from the nearest resort or landmark or sensitive habitat.) Don't know of any specific closures on BNSF in the Northwest at this time, but as of last night the delays were, pardon the pun, snowballing. Boyer West had quite a backlog on his hands, with late trains going dead short of Hauser Yard and needing to be dog caught into the fueling facility. Earlier in the week, the initial round of wet, heavy snow was causing signal and switch outages on the Columbia River Sub between Bluestem and Lyons. Lots of MofW and crew shuttle vehicles getting stuck too, sometimes fouling a yard lead or main line for hours while workers stuggle to yank it free.
