Preparation for war was skimpy and a very near thing. The folks who were in the National Guard, enlisted before 12/41, or made the armed services their careers, were thrown into the gap without proper equipment, such as naval ammunition that actually exploded, torpedoes that would do the same,Aircraft that were already obsolete, WWI uniforms, poor leadership. Volunteers got little training. The Marines barely held Guadalcanal, using the M1903 Springfield rifle- 5 shots in a clip, bolt action, reload in the face of a banzai charge. The 1903 part is the year that the rifle was adopted.

It took more than a year for the US to crank up the production lines, while a few committed folks held on to their lives just long enough before losing them.
