In 1901 the Fair Oaks branch line was built by Southern Pacific Railroad in response to a need to ship orchard fruit grown in the Fair Oaks area. It ran from the SP Folsom/Placerville branch line across the American River to the Fair Oaks Station. The Fair Oaks Station still exists today on Bridge Street near the Fair Oaks Railroad Bridge that is used as a bicycle trail today. The original bridge was built in 1901 and the current bridge was built in 1907.
