The perlite plant has increased production, and the lumber mill is also doing well. Frontier sent another GP49 to Lake Railway. Road power is now 2802 and 2809, with 700 in Lakeview as a spare or switch engine. They are now running more than once a week otherwise 2809 would have kept doubling or tripling the hill between Canby and Ambrose. Both 49s should be able to handle about 20 loads up the hill without doubling. Alturas to Lakeview (leased from Lake County) is all 10 mph, Alturas to Perez (leased from UP) is mostly 20 mph.
Small units you saw were probably the four RS4TC units that the City of Alturas picked up years ago as military surplus for a railroad museum that never seemed to jell. There was also a privately owned GE 80 ton. Engines and cars were stored at the old lumber mill in Alturas, but I heard rumors of a new mill in Alturas.
