To the person whose sole identity is behind a dollar bill - There are things in this world which completely surpass such considerations as those merely pecuniary and also, didn't your mother teach you that you have to share things sometimes. As social animals, humans tend to need to group together, and taxes are the one way that social behaviour is lubricated, so broaden your outlook. God knows, we all have to pay taxes, mostly of the most regressive sort , sales taxes, which disproportionately fall on the poor, of whose number, I'm guessing, you are not.
So while you're counting, Scrooge McDuck-like, your pile, remember Mr. Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes' dictum,"I don't mind paying taxes; with them I buy civilization!"
The people on that bridge surely couldn't have incurred YOU any costs and even had they excited more expense, the emergency services have things called budgets which anticipate eventualities; indeed that is why we're here in the first place. So, drop this idee fixe with peoples foibles and your purse alone. We all have to take up each other's slack, viz. the annual summer wildfire season.
