This discussion brought back a lot of memories.
In the spring of 1968, Jack Anderson (deceased, known for his work at Mt. Rainier Scenic), Tim Johnson, and I had Jack's mom drop us off at the Steilacoom station in the morning. We hiked back along the tracks to his house just above Day Island, taking pictures along the way. You sure couldn't do that now! I was the oldest, at 16.
This shot is looking back towards Steilacoom from Glacier Sand a Gravel. You can see the Chambers creek bridge down the tracks a ways, and UP train #457, the morning train from Portland is my subject.
I can also remember makeing a setout at the paper plant, while riding with my dad on both the Portland Freight and the Gate Local on the NP.
Wonderful times!
