There was another large SP excursion in that last non-Amtrak month of April 1971. Pacific Railroad Society sponsored the 'Mountain Outin' running round trip Los Angeles-Bakersfield on both a Saturday and Sunday (I believe it was the 17th and 18th). I was only 10 at the time, but my dad and I rode the Sunday trip. I believe we had 6 or 7 units (one was a Geep, the rest F-units) and 22 cars. A great last trip over Tehachapi before Amtrak arrived.
