Railfanning in Glenwood Canyon

This coming October, my son has a tournament in Grand Junction, CO and we are thinking about taking the Zephyr there and back. While there, we have been thinking it might be fun to take some time (we would get there a day early) to go railfanning in Glenwood Canyon. I was wondering if anyone could give some tips on where to go or intel on traffic through this area. In order to do this, I would need to rent a car, but I don't want to spend the money unless there will be some trains. We would arrive in Grand Junction around 11:00 (assuming Amtrak is one time!), so we would have the afternoon/evening for this. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
