I can agree some on the the pre-epa ones P&W has... the 1982 ones on BNSF are pretty unspectacular.

I remember many nights in the dorms at OSU my first year hearing a heavy Toledo Hauler notch it out as the cars cleared the wye in downtown and make a run at the hill to Philomath. More noise than you would ever expect to hear on a branch line train, especially if the slugs weren't running and you had 4-5 prime movers howling away.
