Newbie Fannie--
It's too bad that Mr. Seelye doesn't describe things better than he does. He leaves things up to an individual to "guess"..
The large YARD where Safeco and Qwest fields now reside was the Northern Pacific coach yards.
There is still a LOT of ex-NP street trackage around the Terry Avenue area between Lake Union and Denny Way. A lot more than 150 feet. It is amazing how much still exists.
The trackage that runs between Georgetown (S.Seattle) and Spokane Street, along Airport Way and past Tully's coffee is the ORIGINAL entryway into Seattle for the Northern Pacific.
The METRO busway between Spokane St and Royal Broughan was the mainline for the Union Pacific/ Milwaukee Railroad and Pacific Coast RR. There was thoughts about a tunnel extension Northbound from UNION STATION underneath Jackson Street between 4th & 5th Avenues but it never happened. There used to be a TOWER in Argo Yard right where Argo is intersected by Lucille Street off of Airport Way. Opposite the old Olympic Foundry..
The Burke-Gilman trail past Gas Works Park and thru the Univ of WA campus and north thru Sandpoint, used to be the Northern Pacific Railway. They had a bridge across the ship canal which was removed after the 1970 BNSF merger took place.. Lots of interesting things to see if you know where to look. The guy who could have told you everything and more is tail historian "Warren Wing" who is in poor health and now resides in Salem, OR.
In the meantime, contact AL RAMEY. AL is President of the Northwest Transportation Historical Group and knows a LOT about Puget Sound, after being a METRO driver for over 55-years.
He lives on 20th Ave in Seattle and is in the phone book.
If you need more info, contact AL or myself at:
