The issue with trolley poles is that they have to be installed towards the rear of the vehicle. This is no problem with a bus, but for a truck or a tractor, it is not really possible. Having that kind of pantograph allows installation more or less on top of the cab in a way that it does not really matter what is behind the cab. Another (minor) advantage of the system is that for the catenary, standard components, otherwise used for light rail, can be used.
