Well-written piece. I'm not old enough to remember most of that stuff - by the time I was noticing trains the Del Monte was down to a couple-three cars tacked onto a commute train. The only distinguishing thing was that most of the commute trains were powered by FM Trainmasters while the Del Monte often got a GP7/GP9 or 2 with air tanks on the roof. Given the current condition of the tracks and a major bridge, the lack of any prospect for freight business past Marina, and the socioeconomics of the area nowadays (i.e. bicycles and very expensive cars are the highest and best modes of transportation), I wouldn't hold my breath for a resurrection.
