Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies patrol both the MTA's Metro and the Metrolink Commuter Trains, along with MTA fare inspectors on the Metro. Most of the Sheriff's deputies are aware of train fans, as are many of the MTA and Metrolink staff. And, generally, they don't have a problem with people taking pictures of the trains.

I have never had a problem with photographing in the public areas in and around the Union Station complex. It is generally not a problem to shoot photos from the public platform areas, including the back platform area overlooking the 101 Freeway, which are usually open to the public.

It is not a good idea to try to enter any closed areas in LAUPT including: the tracks, or construction areas. These areas are closed for safety and security reasons, so don't even think about it, as it reflects very badly on all of us who enjoy photographing the trains.

Another interesting location to shoot telephoto lens shots from is the balcony of the MTA cafeteria, which is generally open on weekdays.

If you are questioned, let the authorities know what you are doing, and observe and follow their advice.

FYI... I do believe that "commercial" shoots may/do require permits, so if that is your intent, I would advice checking with LAUPT on-site management, LACMTA, or Metrolink directly for the required permission.
