Now that it is getting silly, back to the original question. Yes, Metrolink owns or has full access to the line between LAUPT and Lancaster. From Lancaster to Mojave is UP, from Mojave to Yermo, is Berkshire Hathaway. This option makes sense, for a variety of reasons, as one of the main obstacles has been capacity on Cajon. The cost of a connection at Mojave would be small compared to any upgrades necessary to access Cajon.
This is also similar to the thinking of the LA-LV HSR via Palmdale, across the High Desert Corridor (EIR for freeway and rail out now) to Victorville, then from there to Vegas.
Cajon is congested and would be very costly to upgrade for more capacity to add any significant passenger services. The capacity via Santa Clarita and Palmdale is available, but slow now. In the longer term, the HSR connection would raise speeds significantly, connecting directly into LA markets, significant markets in the SF Valley, Sta. Clarita, and Palmdale/Lancaster to LV.
Now that this is out there, troll away.
