Blame the Insurance Companies for much of the Port Chassis shortage. In recent years there were several well - publicised accidents involving Port Truckers with Port Chassis, with predictibly bad results. These chassis receive minimal maintenance; despite the Federal requirement for yearly inspections I have pulled chassis with FMCSA tags a year or more out of date. The use of Bias - Ply Re - Cap tires on split rims, and differing levels of repairs by Port operators have not helped either. Ironically ,the same Port Truckers who complain about the bad chassis beat the $#!t out of them, and will steal any good tires, mud flaps, and LED taillights off them !!! All taken together, it added up to more headaches & liabilities than many Steam Ship Companies wanted to deal with, so many of the SSCo's sold their chassis to 3rd Party Providers, who are mainly interested in their own bottom line.
