DP power in the Columbia Gorge

I see DP helper trains heading east from Portland in the Columbia Gorge. These are apparently going up the Deschuttes line, the constant curvature and the Trout Creek climb calls for power not neded on the water level main line through the Cascades.
Vancouver depot told me today the Coast Starlate would probably not run for another month.
