Scrappers or contractors rebuilding track commonly use the old "jawbreaker" Nordberg Model A reciprocating crank/walking beam spike puller which pulls both sides of the rail at the same time. Dangerous for the inexperienced but highly effective as it's entirely mechanical. The "Pride of the Fleet" at A & K!

Bolts are generally removed using a gas powered power wrench which will undo both sides by swinging it back and forth. Most popular is the Safetran Model C (also an A&K favorite) or Geismar. Hydraulic impact wrenches (Stanley is one) are also used but not to the extent of the mechanical ones which will snap a bolt off if the nut is rusted.

Of course if all else fails there is always the cutting torch!
