The Cascade Tunnels were and are engineering marvels. I recomond any railfan to visit the east portal of the present Cascade Tunnel and also the original Cascade Tunnel
The Iron Goat Trail goes from Scenic to Wellington/Tye. The trail is the roadbed used from 1893 to 1929. The grade is 2.25% and the trail is nine miles. The best time to visit is late June to late September. Passes are required and can be obtained from the ranger station in Skykomish. Possibly the trailhead at Scenic might have passes as well.
