There is a good section of Milwaukee mainline still in operation between St Maries and Plummer, Idaho. It is run by the St Maries River Railroad, which is owned by Potlatch Forest Industries.
Almost all of the equipment used by this railroad is original Milwaukee Road including the three rebuilt GP-9's,the two switchers and hundreds of log flats (vintage c.1948.)
They also operate on the ex Milwaukee Road branch line from St Maries to Clarkia, Idaho to pick up log loads bound for the Potlatch Mill in St Maries. Well worth stopping to see and photograph.
If you are into hiking/biking at all, the Hiawatha Trail from the east portal of the St Paul Pass (Taft) tunnel down to Avery is well worth the time. The scenery is spectacular and it includes the famous "loop" with all of the tunnels and bridges you would want.
