Feedwater Heater on 2-8-0 18

There was a comment on that other forum recently about the Worthington FW heater on former Grand Canyon Ry. 2-8-0 being removed account of it not working. If I might add a little explanation to this...I worked for the GCR on that locomotive in the summer of '99. If I was on mornings (W-Th-F), I'd test it on the way over to the station. When I worked nites (Sa-Su), we would frequently get reports of it by the days road crew that it did not work while running to & from the Canyon. I learned that these devices are prone to cavitation at higher altitudes if the packing on the pump end is not kept pretty snug. If your railroad has an up & down profile and you are in & out of the throttle fequently, then these reciprocating pumps have to be constantly readjusted. They worked well on the SP in most areas, especially the San Joaquin Division where there was a lot of even running. Down at close to sea level and very few moves once you were out of the yard. It wasn't so much that they don't work as the pump will nearly always stroke, but getting it to pick up & deliver water at its advertised rate is sometimes a problem. The operators in Colorado feel that another injector, probably a non-lifting type will be more reliable and thus offset the potential savings of the feedwater heater.
