I read a comment on That Other Board that was
very interesting: The poster pointed out that
although seat belts would have helped the poor
student engineer -- who also was badly injured --
they could not have helped poor Glenn Steele
because there was no place for him to sit in
that dratted cab.
The commenter also pointed out that it took auto
manufacturers a long time to realize they needed
to provide occupants protection against secondary
collisions -- the body's impacts with the interior of
the vehicle. That is one huge reason why we wear
seat belts.
I absolutely detest railroads using cab cars, but -- that
particular cab car, from what I saw in the photos, did not
collapse or get crumpled in the collision. Amazing.....
It is way past time to provide seat belts for everyone
who rides trains, and for all crew members, and to
design and build double-ended locomotives to pull
all commuter trains, and to build runaround tracks at
the ends of all commuter lines. No more cab cars!
We are used to using seat belts in autos and airplanes,
even though the chances of being in a plane crash are
very low, so -- why not provide them to all train passengers?
ASAP!
And grade-separate all crossings where collisions have
occurred -- ASAP.
