Some years ago I rode the Esquimalt and Nanaimo when the RDC's made daily round trips from Victoria up to Courtenay-Comox and back. I rode from Nanaimo to the end of track at Courtenay and returned to Nanaimo, riding in the lead RDC (of two operating that day). Our engineer kept a wooden stick between his door into the coach area and the doorframe. When I asked why, he said that it was to allow for his rapid escape from the "cab" and then back into the coach seating area in the event of a grade crossing crash. He pointed out that there were numerous unprotected crossings, paved and dirt, and a lot of logging trucks, and said he didn't want to be up front in an RDC when what he felt would be an almost inevitiable crash occurred.
