If there are stories of train crews doing it, they are probably rare and might (emphasize *might*) be interesting.

There's a qualitative difference, though: if the plane hits hard enough (as apparently happened in the Germanwings crash) most of the evidence is destroyed; apparently enough damage was done that even the "black" boxes are damaged (voice) or destroyed (case of the data recorder has allegedly been found, but it was broken and the parts especially the memory card are missing). And if it hits hard enough in a remote enough area there are no witnesses (or survivors) so any other observations (like air traffic control) are unlikely to provide more than general information. Despite the forces involved, it's hard for a train to do that, though I kind of wonder about HSR (which should be largely automated to avoid such shenanigans, among other reasons).
