Passenger Rail Service
A feasibility analysis for Passenger Rail Service in Santa Cruz County is underway. Consultants are analyzing several possible operating scenarios identified by the public and RTC board. Representatives from other agencies operating or planning passenger rail systems (Rail Peers) are providing assistance in reviewing data. The consultant team is synthesizing input on preliminary data, performing an evaluation of the scenarios based on the RTC-approved metrics and preparing a draft plan. Staff is pushing the team to have the plan available for public review before summer.
The Santa Cruz & Monterey Bay Railway is evaluating excursion services, in addition to the Train To Christmastown that has run for the past three seasons, including dinner and sunset services. The company will draw upon their experience operating many freight and excursion services in other parts of the country and the world. Passenger rail service proposals will come before the RTC for review.
Roaring Camp continues to operate passenger excursion service on the Santa Cruz Branch Line from the Santa Cruz Wye to the Boardwalk. Last year, Roaring Camp and the Santa Cruz & Monterey Bay Railway worked together to operate the Davenport Steam Train event which traveled up the coast from Santa Cruz.
Other interest in special event use of line includes the Golden Gate Railroad Museum and the North American Railcar Operators Association.
