Nice image, however that is not an SD-45-2. It is actually an ex - Erie Lack - O - Money SDP-45, one that was wrecked. The E-L sent it to Electro - Motive to be rebuilt. With E-L's finances being what they were, and not wanting to pay extra for EMD to fabricate a new SDP long hood, EMD simply placed a then - production Dash - 2 long hood on the unit. Since the SDP-45 and the SD-45-2 shared the same long frame, it was a perfect fit.
Notice that the unit does not have Dash - 2 ( HT-C ) trucks; it also does not have the extended height fuel tank that E-L specified on their SD-45-2's. This fuel tank ran all the way up to the walkways on both sides, necessitating a relocation of the air reservoirs to the inside long hood end, which necessitated louvers in the last few long - hood doors as well.
As such, the unit is quite rare. I think there may have been 2 of these SDP wreck rebuilds. Still, it is of interest to members of E-L Tech Society, who already have made a buy request should Montana Rail Link retire the unit.
