Less trucks on the road ??
I see a lot (a huge bunch) of those container hauling truck everyday and if the arguement is for public funds to get more of the heavy haulers off the roads, then whatever is supposed to be to case surely isn't happening. In Solano county on Hwy. 12, the road between Suisun and Hwy. 160 & I-5 is a toal wreck. Why ? There doesn't seem to be an incentive for those public officals and the private for profit garbage companies to put more of their loads on a train. The CFNR, UP & BNSF had at one time a out-of-state garbage train which was fine and while it wasn't a money maker, it didn't require the number of garbage truck now plying to roadways.
Trucking garbage from Napa over to Pittsburg is a total waste of money including the money it's gonna take to repair the roadway. And hauling garbage in from other outlying areas into the local landfill here is the same.
If UPRR is to get the public funds, then there has to be a clause(s) in place to where a more proactive approach to really getting more of the heavy haulers off of the various roads than what it is presently. UPRR had the ROW ripped out on the ex-SN years ago that went up to Clarksburg and it would take a huge sum of money to repair the Thames creek bridge problem if by doing so would seriously get more trucks off of the roads by increasing the available avenues of rail transportation. Routing all coast or Bay Area rail traffic via the West Valley line makes more $$$ sense than it does to keep all of the north-south traffic on the East Valley line.
With the ever increasing diesel costs, what is keeping our elected officals from thinking clearly ?????????????
