"With the ever increasing diesel costs..." I just fueled up in Illinois at $4.12 per gal. And I've got a load thar was originally slated for intermodal, from Indiana to Oregon. My company can't do this often, but right now it's cheaper to have me run it than to have me sit, but it soon will be far cheaper to put it on a train.
This applies to all possible intermodal runs that were thought to be uneconomical, i.e. under 750 miles. The price of feul is causing the consumer prices to rise accordingly and the consumer responds by buying less, of course. So, the whole economy drops down in pace with the feul prices' rise. The railroad effeciency of size is too great to be ignored and the government putting money into a railroad will be of tremendous benefit to ALL.
