What a lot of people seem to forget is how much subsidy the trucks get by not being charged proportionately for the disproportionate amount of damage they impose on the highways from their axle loadings, not to mention their negative impact on traffic congestion. The trucks do pay higher usage fees than autos, but the fees do not come close to offsetting the physical destruction of the highway surfaces, subgrade and bridgework. Putting containers on rails instead of asphalt helps the taxpayer in both respects.
