You are entierly right in both posts.
SP would be doing the same as the UP on the Natron Cutoff.
Any one that has ever had anything to do with the Maintenance of the Siskiyou line would know the unpractability of putting any more traaffic over it. I feel the UP was taking a risk running the Center Beam Car trains with heavy power that way. This has alwqays been a high maintenance railroad from it inception. 3% grade (highest on the SP main line system). Heavy ground tunnels (13), 15 deg curves (Dollarhide), 10 deg curves (Wolf Creek Loop) just to mention a few of many. 90 lb. rail laid new in 1909. Questionable tie condition. SP dumped this secondary line after the lumber business crashed snd it was no longer profitable to keep it. Same as the NWP.
