That's a great story about your grandfather taking you out on the railroad. Too bad the stiff regulations nowadays prevents children from experiencing the railroad for what it really is.
My earliest memory of true railroading was when my father took me to the Vancouver, BC yard of the BN. He used to sell BC lumber to the US, and was invited on a Jan1 tour (when the company "brass" weren't on shift). I got to sit in a BN switcher's cab while it shunted cars around the yard. I must have been only five years old at the time.
Later that day, we toured a lumber reload centre, and I got to ride (and operate the levers) of a forklift as we loaded a centerbeam. It was awesome for a little boy to get close and personal with the railroad industry. Ever since that day, my interest in railroads has blossomed into a hobby.
BTW, that's not why they call me almo. hehehe
