Re: Gold Line shut down in South Pasadena until noon for repairs

Coincidence? Strange time of year for wire problems, but Sacramento had them a couple of weeks ago to ... shut down their Gold Line for most of a day.
In the past, I only expected wire problems under 3 conditions: mechanical problem with a car snagged and pulled down the wire (sometimes with help from the weather); extreme heat or cold caused wire to droop or pull too tight; and something non-rail-related hit it (like a big oak tree). On one occasion, it was a copper thief who somehow got several 100' of wire down and into a truck overnight without becoming a crispy critter or being caught. But now the wires seem to be just failing on their own under benign conditions.
Also interesting that neither this story nor the one-paragraph item covering the Sacramento incident provided any information about what really happened - just that wire repairs were needed that took a good part of a day.
