The Santa Cruz & Monterey Bay Railway has a new general manager and he invited me down to their depot this past Thursday to get acquainted. After our talk he informed me they had a centerbeam loaded with lumber for Big Creek and asked if I would like to join them for the pick up and delivery.
I arrived at the coach yard before them and I spent some time with the equipment. SC 1101 and SC 1102 are still looking as handsome as ever.
MH 89 was the power for the day and I tried to imagine her in a freshly painted new paint scheme.
Based on the talk I have been hearing lately around the depot Eugene Vicknairs 21st Century Daylight paint scheme is being considered.
Soon the crew arrived and it was time to fire up the locomotive and head over to Watsonville Junction.
On the way over we passed by one of the local residents that inhabit the rail corridor.
Approaching the West Beach Street crossing.
Crossing the Pajaro River.
Approaching Watsonville Junction as the conductor radioed the UP dispatcher to request clearance to enter the yard.
We headed to the garden track and picked up the centerbeam for Big Creek.
All the switches were aligned for our return and we headed back to Watsonville.
Heading down Walker Street past the delightful murals.
Back at Watsonville they cut the loaded centerbeam and left it on the siding by Big Creek. Then they used the main to run around to position the locomotive and shoved the centerbeam into the Big Creek yard.
After the delivery was complete the conductor aligned the switch to take us on the industrial lead that goes to the coach yard and MH 89 was tied down.
With the completion of the bridge work SC&MB will be able start to put together operational plans for recreational and dinner train service on the Davenport branch. 2016 promises to be an interesting year, especially if the Golden Gate Railroad Museum relocates to the Santa Cruz Branch Rail.
