Bayshore Yard had become obsolete. SP was going out of the car repair business. The Bayshore shops had closed. Diesel locomotives had replaced steam so the roundhouse and steam locomotive service shops were not used. Railroads nationally were consolidating their repair and maintenance facilities.
As service businesses replaced manufacturing in San Francisco, rail shipments were going down.
(At one time Santa Fe had jobs scheduled for 24 hours in San Francisco to handle car switching).
SP was paying property taxes on many acres of unused land at Bayshore Yard. So it made very good business sense to sell it.
