The talk concerning the former Southern Pacific right-of-way in Niles Canyon seems to be might bit early. The right-of-way is owned by Alameda County who received in regard to a Highway act dating back to the 1920's. In regard to the Trails Act the Union Pacific would have the right to reclaim the route, but I do not know if that applies to the Highway Act. On any account, ACE would have no such right. All of the rail is owned by the Pacific Locomotive Association - not Alameda County. Most of the rail is eighty-five pound rail that originally came from the Western Pacific. The route, when compared to the line the UP and ACE uses in the Canyon, is slow, and is subject to mud slides. I admit that anything could be possible, but I can't see where there would be much of a return for the UP in regard returning to the former Southern Pacific right-of-way. I do not know if the UP could live with the eighty-five pound rail, and signals would have to be installed. It would appear that much study would have to be undertaken before any action is undertaken in the Canyon.
