NYC subway in turn was based on one year old technology originally used on the North Shore RR which was the electric interurban system running from Sausalito to Fairfax and San Rafael, connecting commuters with San Francisco via ferry. Was consolidated with other lines into the NWP in 1907.

It's amazing to consider how sparsely populated Marin was when this system was built and in the end the population boom that didn't come wouldn't have saved the system when it finally did come.
