Newspapers, as a whole, have indeed gotten smaller and more thinly staffed in the past 20 years. TV and radio news (news magazines, too) have suffered similar fates starting more recently. Though newspaper companies that continue to make the successful transition from print to online will thrive, they aren't all doing that, and the TV/radio companies will have an even harder time with that. As for printed newspapers, they'll likely never go away completely, but as loyal print readers die off, print will increasingly become a niche/boutique item. And fewer and fewer boxcars (and truck trailers) of newsprint will roll.
