When I moved to the Sacramento area, the Bee (visible from light rail) was getting paper by boxcar at the rate of at least 2, usually 3, sometimes 4 deliveries a week, 2-4 cars at a time. Their trackmobile was a busy little Bee (sorry, couldn't resist...).
I don't remember exactly when they stopped getting regular deliveries, but it was certainly before the 2008 crash. It didn't stop suddenly; mainly, the number of cars gradually declined until it was more an occasional delivery than a regular one. Since the crash, rail deliveries have been rare, and I don't remember seeing any cars at the dock for at least 3-4 years - probably more. Given the state of dead-tree printing in general, and newspapers in particular, I suspect we will never see rail deliveries to the Bee again - their demand is easily satisfied by truck now.
Wonder how long before UP makes it official by pulling out the switch and the drill track?
