The derailment site is almost underneath the Portland Ave. overpass, between Puyallup Ave. and Hwy. 509. As noted above, it occurred on the diamond crossing of U.P.'s old mainline, now a switching lead to their small Tacoma Yard , Simon Metals, and the former U.P. freighthouse / Tri - Pak lumber reload. The other track at the diamond is the joint U.P. / BNSF lead across the Puyallup River to Tacoma Rail. Both engines were upright as of 4:15PM Friday, with visible damage and yellow tape on the BNSF unit's front handrails and engineer's side steps. Hulcher is on site with a crane, as well as BNSF M of W and Mechanical Dept. trucks.
Both locomotives involved are RCL - equipped, however I have spent many a lunch hour under the Portland Ave. bridge watching the switch jobs, ( as recently as this past Tuesday ), and both jobs normally use 2 man crews. The U.P. job even has an old MoPac caboose as a shoving platform. I am not familier with S.O.P. for this area, but I do not recall hearing a lot of scanner chatter between the various RR crews involving use of the diamond. I do hear both U.P. and BNSF double stack trains from Tacoma Rail calling the BNSF yardmaster for instructions.
