The US designation is a holdover from the 1920s or '30s and the first federally funded system. Some states have kept the US signs and other states (like California) have mostly done away with the US signs (for example old US-466 is now State Route 58). In law, US-101 is listed at State Route 101, US-6 is SR-6, US-395 is SR-395, etc.
The non-operating railroad is not in this river canyon but is in the eastern fork so this project does not impact, physically, the railroad.
