Apparently, there have been many actions undertaken by the railroads to protect the enviroment in recent years as of the time of this "Earth Day" as of today Tuesday, April 22. 2008 like the introduction by the UP of a "Green Locomotive" that was the subject of this news story which footage is viewable on the YouTube website at this webpage link address (see below):

Also, it would be interesting to observe what the affect of an increase in passenger train (especially Amtrak) ridership will be having on the enviroment as the cost of gas continues to rise and emissions producing private vehicles are driven less as a result?
It does seem like todays diesel locomotives produce less emissions than 30 years ago though as those more numerous SP SD45's back then seem to do excessively especially in comparison to more modern Dash 9's locomotives of today? Right?
Any thoughts on these subjects?
