In the bad old days, if a railroad would have bothered to contained oil from locomotives they would call up a contractor, who would then spread the oil on the nearby dirt road surface to control dust. Surprising enough, there are still fish in the streams, deer in the fields, the birds return every year, the forests are healthy and it snowed hard enough to crush buildings in New Mexico.
