Yes George, when I started in OC, back 'round '85, Santiago was still being filled. Been out there for work several times. It closed, but still accommodated some small amounts of refuse for some years, then closed for good. The landfill still has an entrance and a small sign on Santiago Canyon road. It's obvious from aerial maps and so close to Irvine Lake. I was always amazed that there was a landfill next to Newport Beach, ie Coyote Canyon landfill. Do you recall use of upper Newport Bay? When on jobs involving dredging, I heard from locals that people used to water ski, haul boats out and paint them and such. We used to be the (almost) only ones to take a motor boat all the way up the back bay for work. One time we used the Boston Whaler for coffee break from Newport Dunes to the Newport Pavillion. Traffic was light. Fun times!
