I remember strings of those old 50', USDOD, wood floor, friction bearing, box cars coming through Taylor Yard during that time. Sabotage or hot box? Could have been either in those days.
I also remember the great photos that the crews at Roseville took at the time. Some of these were hanging in JL Evan's UTU Legislative Office, and Leo the UTU Attorney, in Sacramento. One showed a flat car tossed about 200' in the air, with a load of lumber, looking like a toy train loaded with match sticks just floating into space. An aerial shot showed the leads just disappearing into a place that looked like the Jolly Green Giant had plowed it up.
Lucky that it happened about the time of the crew change, as I recall, and no one was hurt that they know of. If there were transients killed, I don't think they never found them. I also recall that UP found an unexploded bomb a few years ago while rebuilding the yard. They started shipping bombs in modern all steel, roller bearing, box cars with better secuity, after that.
