True, but this is only the direct federal subsidy. Most roads and streets are not paid for with any federal money. For example, city streets are paid for with property taxes and local bond issues. You can't just count the number of vehicles existing, but must determine the percent of use on federally subsidized roads.

None of this usually comes up in discussions however, so your general point is taken.
