9/22/1957 - A significant date for steam in Eastern Washington.
NP 5140, a 4-6-6-4 Challenger, returned to Spokane's Parkwater roundhouse from an assignment at Noxon, Montana. 5140 handled various sized trains, settling a 17 mile line relocation around the new Noxon Rapids dam on the Clark Fork River.
This run was the final steam operation on NP's Idaho division (Paradise MT - Yakima WA) as well as the final run of NP's magnificent Challenger class locomotives.

5140 takes the curve at Algoma at an estimated 70mph! The pacing railfans were hard pressed to catch up.
